A closed head injury is the most common type of brain injury. It means that you received an external impact that damaged your brain, but your skull remains intact. A closed head injury can be classified as concussion (swelling), mass lesions (bruising, blood clots, bleeding, or hemorrhage), and diffuse injuries (microscopic changes throughout the brain).
While an open head injury is when an object broke or penetrated your skull. An open head injury can be classified as skull fractures (cracks in the skull or a piece of bone pushed into the brain) and penetrating injuries (object enters the skull, such as a bullet or a knife).
Both types can result in traumatic brain injury and other debilitating conditions.
